During this project, students explore the real-world math behind a trip to the movies. They use data tables, graphs, variables, and algebraic expressions to model the total cost of a movie outing for families of different sizes and needs. By gathering real pricing data from local theaters—including adult and child tickets at different showtimes, as well as concession prices—students learn how to organize information, identify patterns, compare options, and build mathematical models based on authentic data.

Students then step into the role of movie theater managers, examining the business side of running a theater. They consider operating costs, pricing strategies, and the relationship between revenue and profit, using algebra to make informed decisions about ticket and concession prices. Along the way, they see how mathematics can support real business choices—helping keep the projectors running, the seats filled, and the popcorn popping.
